STATEMENT BRINGS 'HATE' CHARGE

NSNS Saturday, August 16, 2003 SASKATOON, Sask.—One race controls the world media, a former aboriginal leader charged with promoting "hatred" suggests in a magazine interview. "When a group of people, a race of people, can control the world media, then there's got to be something done about that," David Ahenakew is quoted as saying in an interview with Alex Roslin, a contributor to Toronto-based This Magazine. Ahenakew did not specify which race he was referring to, but he was touching on something few whites dare talk about. Last December, Ahenakew, 68, told another reporter that Hitler "cleaned up a hell of a lot of things" and the world would be owned by Jews if not for Hitler. He later apologized. His original remarks led to a Canada-wide outcry and his resignation from the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nationals senate and boards. In June, after an investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Ahenakew was charged with "inciting hatred." Neither Ahenakew nor Chief Perry Bellegarde of the FSIN could be reached for comment. RCMP spokesman Cpl. Brian Jones said the July-August edition of the magazine will be attached to the Ahenakew case file as information. Canada is a "democracy."
